This is usually the first question a business owner asks once they've decided to actually spend money on ads, and it's asked like there's one correct answer. There isn't — Meta and Google solve two different problems, and picking the wrong one first is the most common way a small ad budget gets wasted before it's had a real chance to work.

They're not competing — they're answering different questions

Google Ads shows up when someone is already searching for what you sell. Someone typing "AC repair near me" has a problem right now and is looking for a solution — Google's job is to be the answer they find first. Meta ads work earlier in that process: they put your business in front of someone scrolling Instagram who wasn't looking for you at all, and give them a reason to start.

In other words: Google captures demand that already exists. Meta creates demand that didn't exist yet. Neither is "better" — they're built for different moments.

The question that actually decides it

Ask yourself one thing: when a customer needs what you sell, do they search for it, or do they discover it?

  • Search-driven businesses — plumbers, dentists, lawyers, repair services, anything people look for when there's already a problem. Start with Google.
  • Discovery-driven businesses — cafés, boutiques, gyms, salons, anything visual or impulse-led that people didn't know they wanted until they saw it. Start with Meta.

Most local businesses fall clearly into one camp or the other once you ask it this way — the confusion usually comes from trying to answer "which platform is best" instead of "how do my customers actually find businesses like mine."

Don't split a small budget across both

With a limited monthly budget, running both platforms at once usually means neither gets enough spend to actually learn what's working — both platforms need a bit of real data before they start performing efficiently. Pick the one that matches how your customers find you, run it properly for a month or two, and only add the second platform once the first one is producing results you understand.
